Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions in Microstructured Glass Fibres

ABSTRACT — Microstructured fibres, in particular photonic crystal fibres, permit remarkable control of the propagation of guided light, including introducing a new theme – the guidance of light, in a low-loss single mode, in a microscopic hollow channel. This represents one of the most exciting opportunities in recent years, for it allows one effectively to eliminate beam diffraction both in empty space and in materials with low refractive indices such as gases, vapours and liquids. A selection of recent results, such as opto-mechanical nonlinearities, excitation of orbital angular momentum states in helically twisted photonic crystal fibre (PCF), particle propulsion in hollow-core PCF and ultrafast nonlinear interactions in gas-filled PCF, will be discussed.
