“Exploring complex and nonlinear dynamics for photonics technologies”

Abstract:

Light-matter interactions provide linear and nonlinear dynamics. When low-intensity light travels through a multimode waveguide or a scattering medium, it often experiences diffraction and dispersion. However, photons and matter interact for high-intensity light propagation, and the spatiotemporal distribution of light changes with the nonlinear dynamics. In this talk, we delve into the intricacies of spatiotemporal linear and nonlinear interactions in multimode waveguides and complex media to explore uncharted territories for developing cutting-edge applications for lasers and machine learning. First, we cover next-generation fiber lasers and utilize temporal/spectral analysis and ultrafast imaging techniques to uncover rare events and improve them to make them useful for high-power laser applications. Later, we use deep neural networks to learn and control spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in multimode waveguides to develop controllable frequency generation and numerical tools to replace time-consuming conventional simulations. Finally, we introduce state-of-the-art photonic neural networks and optical computing tools. Our novel approaches introduce complex nonlinear dynamics to elevate the performance of optical computing. Our methods create a path for energy-efficient and scalable computing with the speed of light. These approaches can be used as a stepping stone to demonstrate advanced photonics Technologies.

Dr. Uğur Teğin is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Koç University. He received his BSc degree in Physics (2015) and his MSc degree in Material Science and Nanotechnology (2018) from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. He received his PhD in Photonics (2021) at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland. He then pursued his postdoctoral studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Medical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, USA. His research interests include nonlinear optics, optical computing and machine learning, fiber optics and lasers, ultrafast optics and imaging. He has authored or co-authored 18 journal publications and 3 patents in these areas.
