“Quantum Biophotonics and Ophthalmology”

Abstract:

You might perceive the current trend of prefixing “quantum” to various concepts as somewhat exaggerated, perhaps merely for embellishment. After all, computers operate using transistors, which adhere to quantum mechanical principles, thus inherently possessing quantum attributes. So, why the pursuit of constructing a “quantum computer” and marketing it at exorbitant prices? You may understandably harbor suspicious that labeling biophotonics as “quantum biophotonics” serves as a mere ploy to attract a broader audience to this seminar. However, allow me to assure you that this is not the case! In this seminar, I will elucidate the distinctive features of the latest generation quantum technologies and how they offer unparalleled advantages over conventional methods in biophotonics, such as ellipsometry and polarimetry [1,2]. Furthermore, I will delve into their transformative potential in medical applications, particularly in fields like ophthalmology [3,4]. Join me to explore how these advancements revolutionize our approach to understanding and utilizing light-matter interactions in biological systems.

Born in Istanbul in 1971, Özgür E. MÜSTECAPLIOĞLU graduated from Bilkent University, Department of Physics, in 1993. He completed his MS and PhD in 1995 and 1999, respectively, in quantum optics under the supervision of Prof. Alexander S. Shumovsky. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1999 to 2002, he worked on atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates and degenerate Fermi gas.mHe joined Koç University in 2002 and became an assistant, associate, and full professor of Physics in 2005, 2007, and 2012, respectively. He conducted research as a visiting professor at ETH Zurich, Princeton University, Queen’s University Belfast, and Humboldt University Berlin in 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2022, respectively. Since 2021, he has been working as an associate researcher at the Basic Sciences Research Institute (TBAE) of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). From 2017 to 2021, he represented Türkiye in the management boards of the Quantum Technologies for Space and Atomic Quantum Technologies European Union Research Networks. With 180+ articles published, including cover papers in leading physical and popular science journals, he has received several awards, including the Distinguished Young Scientist Award by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) in 2004, the TÜBİTAK Research Incentive Award in 2007, the METU Mustafa Parlar Research Award in 2009, and Koç University Outstanding Faculty Award in 2019. He was the first researcher from Turkey to be included in the American Physical Society (APS) Distinguished Science Reviewers list in 2012 and recognized as a Trusted Reviewer by the Institute of Physics (IOP) in 2023. He has been a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences Association since 2013. He received the TÜBİTAK 100th Anniversary Science Award in 2023 for his outstanding work on the development of high-performance photonics, thermal, sensing, and computer quantum technologies using light and atomic systems in the fields of quantum optics and thermodynamics.
